A Prayer for the New Year

prayer for the new year

Every year it seems to start earlier. Before Thanksgiving is done, Halloween items show up in the stores. Before Halloween is done, Christmas items and ads are everywhere. Then in between Halloween and Christmas, U.S. Black Friday (now not only a day but a whole week of sales) is becoming a very recognized event internationally.

However, I see that people are slowly starting to wake up. Whether it’s that we have reached a critical point of self-realization or the system itself that is failing us, more people are choosing to disengage from the frenetic and artificially created temporary emotional satiation that consumerism can create.

Some of us are going back to the meaning of the holiday or more importantly, creating what the holiday means for us. Thanksgiving for me is about celebrating the harvest and being grateful for the bounty of the earth and all of the important good things in life – family and friends, food, health, and that we are all able to get together. Halloween is when I honour my family that has gone before me and connect with Spirit.

My family stopped giving individual gifts for Christmas many years ago. Going out in the crowds, spending money (we have a big family), receiving things we might not really have use for took away from what we wanted to create. Now we bring a gift that can be shared so that it brings all of us together. It could be a meal or snacks, a cd to listen to at dinner time, a new game or an old one.

This year I’m bringing some food and wool. We’ll have a nice lunch and then those who are interested are going to try felting our own slippers.

If I give you three wishes, what would you wish for? (And no wishing for more wishes!) Really, what would you wish for? Somewhere in there, most people wish for world peace.

If only we could all just get along. If only we could see each other without the judgement, sense of entitlement, insecurities, and all the other thoughts and emotions that come from a feeling of lack.

As we come to the end of the year and look forward to the beginning of a new one, I would like to offer a prayer. I know that we are all connected. I know that if we could just stop and breathe, that we might notice the stars above us, the earth below us, the feeling of love in our own hearts.

A Prayer for the New Year

As you leave the year behind you and open to a new year of possibilities, I send out to you these blessings:

May you see the kindness of the universe surround you and support you. May this open your heart to receive love and compassion.

May the brilliance of your own soul light the path before you and bring comfort and inspiration to others to do the same.

When the winds of change behold you, may they dance around you and uplift you to new heights of joy.

May you follow your heart according to it’s own rhythm, expand your consciousness to communicate with all of creation, and realize then, that there is only one heart, one rhythm, one consciousness, one force behind all of life – and that is Love.

Blessings to you for the New Year.
