Psychic FAQs – Overwhelm

spirits overwhelm

Sometimes I get asked questions about what it’s like to be psychic. People have ideas about being psychic that they get from TV or movies. Or they think it’s a gift that is uncontrollable. They may think that I get bombarded from every moment that I get up. That being psychic is being overwhelmed by spirits and messages everywhere I turn.

So let me tell you what it’s really like to be psychic. You may be a little surprised to hear that I feel normal and not normal all at the same time.

My experiences are normal for the psychic friends that I have. But for other people who don’t experience what I do, it’s not so easy to relate to or understand. And while I too like to watch and read all that cool (mostly unbelievable) psychic stuff that comes out in the popular media – it’s just not like that.

You know the TV show “Medium”? The one where this woman has psychic dreams, goes around getting psychic “hits” from touching things, seeing people in her environment. She can’t turn around without getting some message from some spirit who has been wronged and needs justice?

Every time I turn around I don’t see a spirit. Every now and then, I may see a spirit. For example, for a while I was seeing half a black cat in spirit. I would see the front half (which is good – no litter to clean – ha, ha! Just a little psychic humour) blip in a couple times a day. This lasted for a few days and then it disappeared.

Every few days, I’m wakened by spirit or sense an energy around. Sometimes it’s people I know, sometimes people I don’t know. I don’t feel overwhelmed by it. It’s just part of being psychic and a medium. If I wanted it to happen more, I’d tune into it deliberately.

As far as messages go, for the most part, it’s where I put my attention. So think of it like being focused on watching a movie or reading a book. When you are engrossed in a movie or a book, you aren’t aware of what’s going on around you. That’s just like normal life.

Then when I want to get messages, I shift my focus. So instead of watching the movie or reading the book, I’ll focus on a different part of the environment. I have filters on otherwise if I was open and tuned in all the time, it becomes tiring. And yes, a little overwhelming.

Occasionally, I do get a psychic message that just pops in without me tuning in. But it’s not my ordinary way of working. There may be psychics out there that prefer to be more open as a natural way of being.

What I find is that when I do that, I pick up too much energetic and emotional stuff from other people and the environment. Then I’m left to process it and it affects my thoughts and emotions.

I teach people how to open up their psychic abilities and how start controlling their abilities when they are too sensitive and open psychically. It’s part of developing your psychic skills.

Boundaries are good. Psychic is good. Being too open and overwhelmed as a psychic is not. Luckily this is controllable – opening up and not being too open.

Hello, first I’d like to say I found these posts very informative. Great job
Before I get to my question I’m going to give you a little back story of “dreams” I can remember very vividly and have really stuck with me for years and I haven’t been able to explain them.
When I was about 17 I was volunteering in a senior home and had become very close to one gentlemen, he loved telling me the stories of when he was in the war as much as I enjoyed listening to him. One night I was sleeping and had this dream he was standing at the end of my bed and said ” I’m sorry, I have to go now. I will always remember the time you spent with me” I woke up the next morning thinking that was really strange. When I got to the senior home the next afternoon. They had told me he had passed away the night before.
Now fast forward to when I was 26 my mom and I had been planning a trip to Mexico. My grandfather had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukaemia. I was going to cancel my trip but after much convincing from my grandmother I went on the trip. The minute we landed in Mexico, I got this strange feeling I don’t know how to explain and looked at my mom and said my grandfather is gone. When I got home 10 days later I got the phone call I knew was coming. My mom was very shocked when she heard what time he passed away and I had said it right then.
A few years after that I was sleeping and had this dream where it felt like I was having an out of body experience where I was sitting on my front steps talking to my dads father, my moms mother, my moms brother and my cat (all deceased) and last night (now age 33) was just about asleep and heard someone whispering I couldn’t hear what was being said as it was very low and muffled. And then heard a loud crack (which I think was thunder) which startled me and I sat straight up and looked in my mirror (which is right across from my bedroom door) and saw 2 people holding hands walking down my hallway. Needless to say with the combination of that and hearing whispers I got up and searched my house and there was nobody there. At that point I went back to bed and sleep was a thing of the past as I kept replaying that over and over in my head. The more I thought about it the more I thought those “people” walking away from my bedroom may have been my grandparents (my grandmother whom I was very close to passed away this past April) but then I made myself think it was just wishful thinking that it was them. I’ve had other dreams throughout the years but nothing that I remember this vividly. So am I crazy? Or are these real? Do I have son sort of medium ability? Should I do something about these “dreams” or just ignore them?

    Hi Amy,

Glad you find the blog posts interesting! Looks like you have some really intense connections with spirit. These are real. You already have confirmation from the first couple of events of people passing. I wouldn’t doubt your experiences. Whether you want to learn to work with spirit in a more direct way is up to you. You don’t have to do anything about the dreams. Think of them as a gift from Spirit, allowing you to be forewarned and connecting with those in your family who want to connect with you.

If you want to explore this ability, start asking certain people who have passed to come into your dreams. Meditation is another great place to start. Be open to receive, calm your breathing, body and mind. Ask for spirit to come and give you images, feelings, words, etc. Don’t interpret and don’t let your mind get in the way.

If you don’t want to explore or don’t like what is happening, you can ask your Spirit Guides, or God, or whomever is coming in your dream state to stop.

I hope this helps. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us!

    All the best,
